Solar Storyteller Instructor

Job Description

The Lead Solar Storyteller Instructor will plan and teach a summer youth media training program to develop youth-driven storytelling around Minnesota’s renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives. 

 

The Lead Solar Storyteller Instructor will develop and teach summer youth training program that promotes healthy development of American Indian youth to ensure the accomplishment of the goals, objectives, and outcomes as required. This position reports directly to the Deputy Director and MIGIZI President.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain timely and accurate program records in the organizational Salesforce database

  • Prepare for youth media project projects including pre-production, story gathering and editing

  • Tailor training to meet the developmental needs of youth participants

  • Manage and coordinate youth media project activities, including field trips and special training opportunities

  • Collaborate with project/program teams daily

  • Communicate as required with families of youth served

  • Collaborate with other organizational and project staff to plan and implement activities and ensure the maximum benefits for youth

  • Schedule and facilitate weekly meetings of the media team.

  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Contribute to a cooperative, collaborative, and flexible work team environment

  • Model positive behaviors to youth and staff

  • Proven ability to actively engage youth and their families/guardians in the creation and pursuit of education and career goals

  • Knowledge of American Indian values and cultural practices

  • Knowledge of and familiarity with Minneapolis / St. Paul Indian communities

  • Background or ability to work with youth in a variety of settings and on a variety of projects

  • Experience in leading media projects around sustainability, climate change, renewable energy, environmental justice, or related social issues

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn principles and benefits of renewable energy, including photovoltaics

  • Excellent writing skills for story development and reporting of program outcomes

  • Minimum of three or more years of digital photography or videography experience using DSLR, mirrorless, or cinema cameras

  • In-depth knowledge of basic video project equipment and hardware (Camera, Tripod, External Microphone, Lightening Kit, Gimbal)

  • In-depth knowledge of video production software (Adobe Suite, Adobe Premiere Pro)

  • Computer skills (Google Suite, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

  • Maintain confidentiality of required information

  • Good driving record and ability to transport youth with an organizational vehicle.

  • Submit to a criminal background check as a prerequisite

  • Applicants should include a link to a portfolio of past creative works

 

Work Environment

Media team lead works primarily in MIGIZI office settings or in a field environment with youth programming. A great deal of time may be spent standing and walking, and these individuals can frequently be exposed to the elements as well. These are normally non-salaried positions that require the ability to lift 50 lbs. The average work week is Monday – Friday, average 40-hour work week, which can include evenings and weekends.
