&Wednesday, and another group on Tuesday & Thursday. We will be able to
work with all of the American Indian 6-8th graders at Sullivan by the
end of the year. Students are working with NAC and Sullivan staff on the
school newspaper, web design, student government and yearbook.
Andersen Open School:
NAC Staff is teaching an elective class with all 6-8th
grade American Indian students. The students are currently working on
articles for the school newspaper. This class has 15 students enrolled.
Anishinabe Academy:
NAC staff has been working in the Physical Education
class along with the Anishinabe Academy teaching staff for the past
three weeks with the 8th graders. We feel that the relationship between
MIGIZI has a strong foundation. Students are asking how to sign up for
the Native Academy after school component. NAC staff is working in
the 8th grade language arts class and we are working with the
middle school math teacher to help students in preparation for the MBST in February 2004.
High School:
South High School:
We are working in South High on a daily basis. We are working
along side South Teachers in the 9th grade civics class and in the 11th
grade English class. Beginning in the second quarter we will add team teaching of
10th grade English to our activities.
After School Activities:
The NAC after school program continues to be strong.
Lesson plans and alternative activities have been planned for the 10th
graders who come in without homework. We are receiving
e-mail information from the 9th and 10th grade teachers regarding
student homework assignments. We have copies of math, science and civics
textbooks on site for student use. We have between 6 and 15 students
attending after school Monday through Thursday.
Students typically arrive at about 3:30 work on homework for one hour. They have a
short snack and social time and then either continue to work on homework, work on
the computer or participate in supervised exercise activities in our
fitness center.
As a final note, we have supported the tuition for 5 American Indian students to enroll
in an after school ACT Preparation class through South High's Community
Education program. We look forward to their success in the class and on the test! |
