Summer Media Institute Premiere
On September 25, a community screening event was held at the Perpich Center for Arts Education, with approximately 100 attendees. Students, their families and community stakeholders were invited to share a meal, watch the videos and then engage in a panel discussion with the youth videomakers.
There was also a reception after the panel discussion. Youth producers talked about how they chose their topics, challenges involved in producing their pieces, and how the Summer Media Institute impacted their education and their lives. Some of the participants even talked about how they had changed their college plans and want to pursue something more based in journalism and media production.
One of the students from this summer said that she was upset that she hadn’t been given opportunities to learn like this in school; that her participation in the summer media institute had helped her to set a new direction for her future; and that her research as part of her work in the institute had helped her to discover her own identity.
