In the Footsteps of Our Grandmothers
This is an exciting new project for young women in high school...
The In the Footsteps of Our Grandmother’s Project positions Indian girls to reclaim the powerful traditions and values of the Ojibwe People that have been largely lost through past colonialistic practices. Based on tribal matriarchal traditions, the proposed project will prepare Indian girls to assume the female’s prominent position as community/tribal leader by imparting the knowledge and skills required to act politically in the best interests of the tribe and community. Girls involved in the project will learn how policy-setting processes work and gain experience in policy environments at tribal and state levels by selecting and advocating a policy issue before the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe Governing Body and/or the MN Legislature. This will require the development and exercise of research skills, advocacy and presentation skills, and strategic thinking. These skills will be honed through an after-school and day trip component for which the girls will be awarded academic credit.
