Environmental Science

Students in our summer Environmental Science class for the past two years have been a team of volunteer researchers for the WHEP project. Students have monitored the health of wetlands in Minneapolis, St. Louis Park, Brooklyn Center and Maple Grove. As part of their monitoring the students collected and identified vegetation and macroinvertebrates from each of the sites. The students took their samples to the microbiology labs at the University of Minnesota where they worked in the laboratory to identify and count the contents of their samples. Their results have been forwarded to Hennepin County for inclusion in a countywide report.

A quality control group for the project also visited our student’s sites and their review of our students’ results were found to have a 97% accuracy. This was the highest accuracy of any of the testing groups in the county. Congratulations to this team of student researchers!
